The Dalit women of Nepal, often labeled "untouchable," experience extreme social exclusion and marginalization based on their caste. These women face multiple forms of oppression - from caste-based discrimination to limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
Despite these challenges, leaders like Dr. Pariyar have worked tirelessly to create pathways for empowerment and equality, inspiring marginalized communities to overcome systemic barriers. This event will explore how collaborative efforts can foster social change and build resilience and hope for the future.
Dr. Bishnu Maya Pariyar, Hon. DLitt, is an award-winning scholar, social entrepreneur, and one of the most inspiring Nepali-American figures. As the founding President of the Association of Dalit Women's Advancement of Nepal (ADWAN), Dr. Pariyar has been at the forefront of social change, improving the lives of over 150,000 marginalized women and their families since 1998.
Her organization, ADWAN, works to promote economic empowerment, dignity, and solidarity, helping women rise above systemic challenges such as poverty, gender discrimination, and social exclusion. ADWAN's partnership with USAID through the Local Works program has made a lasting impact in the Chitwan and Gorkha districts of Nepal.
Co-hosted by Dr. Venera Bekteshi and Dr. Zemarie Deacon
